Page 1 of 23 I read an article recently on shorting and I was struck by the following quote by an expert: "Hedge funds are finding it difficult to locate badly run companies that are good candidates for shorting". Well, a shortage of badly run companies would be a first in history, at least in my lifetime. So it must be the 2nd part of the sentence that is the truth: we cannot find enough shares to short them. Maybe there is a shortage of shorts, so to speak. Many years ago I met a very bright young man who had a formula for finding shorts: He looked for broken business models where the board had only 3 people. I find it hard to believe that there are no broken business models out there. It seems that too many companies, even the badly run ones, have too much cash and are buying back shares. Or maybe there are just too many people shorting a sympton of very large flows into hedge funds.
