The PAN Difference

Time horizon: Our time horizon is 3-5 years. Many investment managers have mandates that require them to act on a shorter or longer term time horizon. The focus on the short term can make investment managers react to events rather than take advantage of them. The focus on the long term can lock some investors into not moving quickly enough. We position ourselves in between both these groups and profit from their limitations.

Risk assessment: We look at risk from a different time horizon and from a different perspective. Our training was in the most volatile and risky assets the world had to offer in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. With this experience, we are able to look at risk from a different perspective from many less experienced investors. During events, panics or crises, investors perceive greater risk than there actually is (or conversely during raging bull markets risks are underestimated). With our ability to analyze risk and our medium term time horizon, we can more accurately evaluate what is really going to happen and take advantage of the opportunity.

Patience: We will wait patiently until we have conviction that acting is necessary. Our analysis is targeted on stocks, markets and industries that we feel have outstanding long term characteristics. We then wait for the opportunities to present themselves before we act. We do not feel pressured to act for the sake of acting.

Preparedness - Our Process: We feel that today there is too much information and it is overanalyzed. Our process is based on our experience over 20+ years. We look for industries/companies/markets that have favorable competitive characteristics. We analyze assets for quality and endurance. We scrutinize a company’s ability to adapt to a changing world. We have done our homework and have targeted some of the world’s best companies. Then we wait.
